How to Measure Reclaimed Roof Tiles

When trying to identify reclaimed clay roof tiles for repair or replacement, accurate measurements are essential. Even small differences in length, width, thickness, or profile can determine whether tiles are compatible. This step-by-step guide explains how to measure reclaimed roof tiles correctly for matching and identification.

Matching reclaimed tiles starts with a few simple measurements.

  • Small differences in size, exposure, or profile help narrow down the possibilities.
  • You don’t need micrometer precision — close measurements are usually enough.
  • A tape measure and clear photos are all we need to begin.

Step-by-Step: How to Measure Reclaimed Roof Tiles

Step 1 - Photos

Take clear photos of the front, back, and a side/profile showing the tile’s shape.

Step 2 - Length and Width

Measure the overall length and overall width with a tape measure.

Overall length (L) and overall width (W)

Tip: Close measurements are usually enough — inches or millimeters both work.

Step 3 - Thickness & Profile

If possible, note the thickness at the edge and capture a side profile photo to show any curve, nibs, or interlocks.

Good to have: Any marking on the back (maker’s stamp or numbers etc)

Step 4 - Exposure

This is optional – If known, include your roof’s exposure (the visible height per course). Not required, but helpful for perfect matches.

Step 5 - Quantity & Shipping

Approximate quantity needed and your City, State, Zip help us quote availability and freight.

Step 6- Fittings (if applicable)

If you need ridges, hips, eaves, end caps or anything else. Please include photos and rough quantities if possible.

Common Measurement Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring along a curved surface instead of flat
  • Forgetting to include thickness or side profile
  • Not photographing the underside or any manufacturer stamp
  • Guessing exposure instead of measuring a full tile
