Restoration of  Bernard Maybeck’s Buck House at Principia College Elsah IL

When Bernard Maybeck first envisaged Buck House he wanted to have a thatch roof. Unfortunately this was not allowed due to the fire hazard, so he used clay shingle tiles and designed the roof to have the big rounded eaves, hips and gables to simulate thatch.

Just before the restoration began a local man who had worked on the project originally presented the college with Maybeck’s original pastel drawings so we were able to map the roof and create 14 different colors and surface textures.
