Clay roofing is also environmentally sensitive and although the investment is much greater than a traditional asphalt shingle roof the payoff is gained in the visual appearance and more favorable life cycle costs.
The Making of Clay Roofing Tile
Clay roof tiles, at least the ones offered by Northern Roof Tiles, are made of the finest clay. Once extracted from the ground it is subjected to a long and arduous process which can take months. The clay is ground down to remove all impurities, it is allowed to relax and then be mixed and ground down, sieved, moistened and one final workout in the pug mill before being extruded under high pressure.
Some tiles we offer are made by hand, some are pressed, color and texture are added and then the tile is dried to reduce the moisture contents to a minimum. Whatever the ‘making process’ the tiles are then fired / baked usually at temperatures in excess of 2000 deg C. The tiles are then tested for soundness, packed and shipped.
All tiles offered by Northern Roof Tiles meet and exceed the Grade 1 requirements of the ASTM C1167 and are covered by the manufacturer’s comprehensive warranty.

Is Clay Roofing Tile Right For Your Home?
For new construction it’s just a question of the esthetics and, of course, budget. For a remodel or re-roof the first question must be ‘can your existing structure stand the weight of a clay tile roof and if not is it feasible to strengthen the roof timbers? The average weight of tiles supplied by our company is from 8 ½ lbs to 16 lbs per sq ft. dead load, depending on the profile and type. Usually an asphalt shingle roof is designed to accommodate around 6 lbs per sq ft. dead load.
